Police Inline for the Future of Transport?

27Sep07

Cops on Inline skatesRecently in Paris I came across a transportation innovation for the local patrol men. These police officers were on Inlineskates. Fully equipped with all of their tools (cuffs, guns, waki-talki etc…) these patrol men were prepared to pursue on their skates. I have seen police before on Segways, and Bicycles, but this was the first time to see them on Inline Skates. I did a quick search and found that the BBC covered a similar decision that was made by some Belgium patrolmen in Antwerp.
I think the interesting thing here is that people are looking for a faster and more efficient means of personal transport. With specific demands coming from people such as policeman and postal workers who are on there feet constantly, with requirements such as being able to go up and down stairs, turn around quickly, with the entire process taking less time and energy then actually walking. With that said I am not promoting laziness (If it were up to me everyone would be running everywhere. Given a healthy and fit body, walking is just a slower and less efficient way of running.)
What tends to be really important for many people is also the ability to easily detach themselves from the form of transport in order to get back on their own two feet. For example hoping off a bike or a skateboard is much easier than unbuckling a pair of rollerblades and putting sneakers back on.
Sneaker-InlinesTo this effect I have also come across a new innovation in the inline skating world with a new skate that straps over a pair of sneakers, similar to a ratchet snowboard binding. I have yet to see a popular or common equivalent for everyday use or short commutes but it could be an interesting concept. I am also very interested in the development of a collapsible skateboard that could perhaps fit into a briefcase. I used to a own a Stowboard, it didn’t fit into a briefcase but the concept was on the right track. However I am more interested in something geared towards an everyday solution. For people looking to cut a short drive, or long walk, into an eco-friendly, healthy and easy commute. In any case I realize this posting is a bit of a mish-mash, but at its core I was hoping to share some sighting perhaps to get some ideas flowing of better ways to get from A to B.
