I have been a dedicated yahoo email user for almost 8 years now. But as new services from Google and an upgraded hotmail interface have been introduced, I couldn’t resist but make myself email accounts on all platforms. One quick note is email size should never be an issue again, as Yahoo has led the way in offering unlimited storage and the others have storage in the gigabytes! Each service has its pitfalls but some have some really slick features which ill talk briefly about:
Hotmail: the black sheep in my mind but a new user interface has really cleaned up the look and feel. Leveraging the all but too familiar outlook, using email feels like im at work and organizing my folders is a chinch. I typically use my hotmail as my default junk email as I sign up or post my email address to others. The best feature is the spam protection. My hotmail was a notorious spam haven and not sure what Microsoft has done but it’s a huge improvement over past versions and other email services especially Yahoo.
Google Gmail: It seems like everyone these days is getting a gmail account. Gmail is great especially since Google is integrating the single sign on feature with all its new apps like Google docs, picasa, blogger etc. The chat function inside your email browser is fantastic as google also logs entire conversations just in case you need to remember something. Spam is a major issue for me and since Google doesn’t offer an option to autoreject spam. Its seems like I get over 200 Viagra emails a day, the tough part is I don’t sort thru my spam box in case a real email is in there because its too painful to sort though. My other pain point is the consolidated email chains get stacked on top of each other. I seem to miss many important email cause of this.
Yahoo: finally yahoo you have stepped up your game. Just last week yahoo have took the covers off the beta and introduced some much awaited features to their email. In browser chat and text SMS chats. Since not everyone I know has yahoo email, the chat function is sort of useless but who doesn’t have a cell phone. I loaded my address book into yahoo complete with phone numbers and instant convo with anyone I want. Texts appear as conversations which looks much like the iPhone text interface. Yahoo does have a problem with Spam as I have turned the auto erase feature on cause it was getting overwhelming.
Not one service is a clear winner but if yahoo enables free POP access (think iPhone feature it offers), I think we have a knockout punch.
