cell phone rental service

black.jpgI was recently in Montreal for some personal business and to see some old friends.  It was really apparent as I walked thru the city that I needed a phone on several occasions.  But as I walked this city (much like any city) there were hardly any pay phones anymore.  My cell phone really hikes up the rate on international roaming cell phone calls and aside from one or two quick calls, I needed the phone to make calls arranging meetings with people.  I know that ATT global GSM phone may offer a good alternative but how bout a cell phone rental service offered by hotels or car rental firms for out of country visitors.

This is my idea.  As you sign into your hotel room, the host offers you a cell phone that allows you unlimited local calls for 5-10 bucks a day.  Think about the peace of mind knowing that you can walk around, book reservations, call ahead for tourist traps and book car rentals when needed. No more looking for phone booths.  I was thinking also that this phone could have a concierge button that automatically calls the hotel concierge when you need assistance within the city (restaurants, lost, theaters, etc).  As you check out, this appears as another room charge on your bill. Perhaps the hotel pays 50 bucks for the phone and needs only a few rentals to recoup the monthly cost and maybe makes additional monies if they make calls outside the country.  Phone could also offer wireless web services (i.e. blackberry) that could be helpful navigating a new city
