Middelgrunden offshore wind farm, near Copenhagen, Denmark, (total length of 3.4km)

I recently came across a picture of this offshore wind farm off the coast of Denmark. What makes this special is it looks absolutely beautiful while helping to provide the residents of Denmark a clean, renewable and sustainability energy source. I didn’t realize but it was built in year 2000!

Offshore wind farms make a lot of sense. For people concerned with noise, size and ugliness, wind turbines can be safely moved into the sea, far from land if need be. Also, the average wind speed is usually considerably higher over open water. There are some drawbacks as costs typically increase as they are harder to install and they must be built taller to reach sea floors.Wind energy is a pollution-free, infinitely sustainable form of energy. It doesn’t use fuel; it doesn’t produce greenhouse gasses, and it doesn’t produce toxic or radioactive waste. I think this offshore example is a great compromise between persevering peoples standards of living while provided new alternatives to oil.

Some cool facts: Wind power accounts for approximately 19% of electricity production in Denmark; The average output of one megawatt of wind power is equivalent to the average electricity consumption of about 250 American households.
